Motivate Students With Climb the Mountain

There are lots of ways to motivate children to both work hard and behave in class. Here is a cute and simple method I use that the kids love. It's called "Climb the Mountain." All you need are some name magnets and a magnetic surface (like a white board or maybe the door). You will find that kids who are motivated by positive rewards are much easier to manage with this method. I have several other versions of this system and usually change it each week.

Instructions

    • 1

Make some name magnets for your kids. Refer to my article: "How to Make Name and Face Magnets for Students."

    • 2

Draw a mountain on a white board and have sections with numbers by each section.

    • 3

Have all of the kids start at "0" each day.

    • 4

Tell the kids that each time the do something good, you will ask them to "climb the mountain."

    • 5

Explain to the kids that the only way they can move down the mountain is if they move up the mountain without being told. This is a philosophical call. I believe in "natural consequences," so I don't think they should move down the mountain and lose positive points for an unrelated incident.
