Things You'll Need:
- crochet hook to fit the yarn you're using (usually a G or H hook)
- worsted weight yarn
-
Step 1
Make a slip knot on your hook to start a chain. Chain 6 times and slip stitch into the first chain made to form a loop.
-
Step 2
Chain 3 times (this will act as the first double crochet here and throughout the pattern),
double crochet 2 times into the loop, chain 3 times,
double crochet 3 times into the loop, chain 3 times,
double crochet 3 times into the loop, chain 3 times,
double crochet 3 times into the loop, chain 3 times,
slip stitch to the first chain 3 (now double crochet). -
Step 3
Chain 3 times, turn your work over so now you're working on the backside,
double crochet 2 times into the chain 3 space, chain 3 times,
double crochet 3 times into the same chain 3 space, chain 2 times,
(*double crochet 3 times into the next chain 3 space, chain 3 times,
double crochet 3 times into the same chain 3 space, chain 2 times,*) this is a corner space and will now be refered to as a corner space,
(3 double crochet, chain 3, 3 double crochet, chain 2) in the next corner space,
(3 double crochet, chain 3, 3 double crochet, chain 2) in the last corner space,
slip stitch to the first chain 3 (now double crochet). -
Step 4
Chain 3 times, turn your work over,
double crochet 2 times in the chain 2 space, chain 2 times,
(3 double crochet, chain 3, 3 double crochet, chain 2) in the chain 3 corner space,
double crochet 3 times in the next chain 2 space, chain 2 times,
(3 double crochet, chain 3, 3 double crochet, chain 2) in the next chain 3 corner space,
double crochet 3 times in the next chain 2 space, chain 2 times,
(3 double crochet, chain 3, 3 double crochet, chain 2) in the next chain 3 corner space,
double crochet 3 times in the next chain 2 space, chain 2 times,
(3 double crochet, chain 3, 3 double crochet, chain 2) in the last chain 3 corner space,
slip stitch in the first chain 3 (now double crochet). -
Step 5
Continue in this fashion working (3 double crochet, chain 2) in each chain 2 space, and (3 double crochet, chain 3, 3 double crochet, chain 2) in each corner chain 3 space.
-
Step 6
Make the square as large as you like. You can choose to make several smaller squares and join them together, or continue working around the granny square until it is large enough to be a blanket.
