Decide If You Want to Breastfeed Your Baby

If you are having a baby one of the biggest decisions you have to make is whether you are going to breastfeed or not. Here are some things to think about.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • baby
  • breast
  • support
  1. Step 1

Do your research before hand. Learn the benefits of breastfeeding, the advantages and so on. Is this something you REALLY want to try? Try and talk to someone or go to a breastfeeding forum to get some idea on what breastfeeding will involve. If you work outside the home keep in mind maternity leave. Will you be able to get your supply up and stock up on breast milk before you go back to work? Do you have loved ones who support you?

  2. Step 2

Are you and your husband/boyfriend in agreement on this? For some women and babies, breastfeeding will be relatively easy. For others, it can be very difficult in the beginning. You need to let your ob and hospital know you are considering breastfeeding. You may want to have formula and bottles on hand just in case.

  3. Step 3

Even if you successfully breastfeed, you may on occasion be away from your baby. You do want your baby to take your milk via other ways. It doesn't have to be a bottle either. You can try a spoon, or a small cup. I know this sounds crazy, but that is only because the bottle is such a strong part of our culture.

  4. Step 4

If you were drinking alcoholic beverages before pregnancy, you won't be doing that right away unless you clear your system of it entirely before your baby's next nursing session. Are you prepared for that?

  5. Step 5

You'll want to go easy on some foods like chocolate, or at least be aware of how your baby's little system reacts to different spices and foods.

  6. Step 6

Are you going to be comfortable nursing in public? Unless you plan to be housebound throughout your breastfeeding career, you will need to prepare for this. Consider getting a sling.

  7. Step 7

Try to block out pressure from other people, even if they have good intentions. YOU are the one who will be trying to learn to do this with your little baby and changing some of your habits to make it work. It's a very personal choice either way. You will bond regardless.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can have a tattoo on your breast and still breastfeed.
  • You can have a nipple ring and still breastfeed. However, you will want to remove it when you nurse.
  • You have to drink a LOT of water-are you ready for that?
  • Be care about dieting. Remember, your baby will burn about 500 calories a day so you will need extra calories. Will that work for you?
