Step 1
Never give the gift back to the same person who gave it to you. If you are not sure who gave you the gift, this gift may be suitable for people of service who don't normally give you a gift. Perhaps this gift is a nice gift to the nurse at your doctor's office who takes care of you, the mail carrier in your office or the teenager who takes care your pets when your away.
-
Step 2
Do not give the gift to someone that the original gifter knows. For example, if your secretary buys you a gift you have no need for, do not re-gift it to anyone in your office. That's just insulting.
-
Step 3
If the gift is truly terrible, please donate it or throw it out. Its not polite to give a gift when you know the receiver would not appreciate it or want it.
-
Step 4
If the item is no longer in the packaging it came in or the packaging is damaged, it is typically not suitable for a re-gift. One of the few instances where it would be a suitable re-gift would be if it were a particularly expensive gift and you know the person you intend to give it to really would appreciate it. Family jewelry, MP3 Players and Cameras would fit this category.

on 11/30/2008 Thanks good article! Everyone re-gifts! May be a great idea to add a removable name tag to gift to prevent giving back tot he original gifter!
