Find Your Perfect Foundation Shade

We've all seen it, and some of us have done it- walked around in public with a dark makeup line across our neck. Not only is this embarrassing but it looks sloppy. You would think that only preteens would be guilty of this but, believe it or not, finding the perfect foundation is just as daunting a task as finding the perfect bra. If you aren't comfortable with having a stranger swab foundation across your face, or you've spent far too much money on the 'wrong' shades, take these steps to find what works for you- and experience makeup lines no more! Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Go to your favorite department store cosmetics counter; though there is a cost difference, department stores allow you to try products before you buy. Besides, it's much more cost efficient to splurge on a key item (like foundation) and skimp on the fun color products.

    • 2

Shop with a clean, moisturized face. If you can't imagine walking out the door without your 'face' on, take makeup remover wipes along with you.

    • 3

First, decide what type of coverage (sheer, medium and full) and finish (matte, dewy, luminous) you want.

    • 4

If you choose to go it alone, the best beginning point is to find a shade that best resembles your current foundation. Then pick 2 additional shades- one lighter and one darker.
**You may be shocked to find that the color you think is perfect for you may not be!

    • 5

Remove any makeup on one cheek (if necessary). Using 3 separate Q-tips, apply a vertical stripe of each color from the lower check to the jawbone. Keep in mind that our necks are typically lighter than our face, but we match foundation here to avoid a two-toned look.

    • 6

Now, compare the 3 stripes and find the one that 'disappears' on your skin. If one does not, wipe it off and start again. Foundation matching is basically trial-and-error; so if you get discouraged just ask a consultant for their expertise advice.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask the consultant for samples of each shade to use in natural light, anyone looks good in the right lighting- but can it stand up to the sun?
