If you want a perfectly juicy turkey for Thanksgiving, taking the time to brine your turkey is a great way to get the results you are looking for. Brining a turkey is easy, and is a great way to make sure your turkey is the talk of the table!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 gallon chilled water
  • 1 gallon vegetable stock
  • 1 cup kosher salt
  • Additional seasonings such as brown sugar, apple juice, peppercorns
  1. Step 1

To make your turkey brine, combine 1 cup kosher salt, 1 gallon of vegetable stock and any other desired seasonings in a large stockpot. Allow liquid to come to a full rolling boil.

  2. Step 2

Remove from heat, cover, and cool to room temperature. Once the mixture reaches room temperature, place into the refrigerator until completely chilled.

  3. Step 3

Combine the brine mixture with your 1 gallon of chilled water in a large stock pot or other container large enough to hold your turkey. Place the turkey into the brine mixture breast side down so that it is completely submerged in the liquid. If your turkey is not completely submerged, you will need to turn the turkey periodically.

  4. Step 4

Place the container in a cool area. If the temperature in your home is too warm, place the container back into the refrigerator so that it remains cold.

  5. Step 5

Allow the turkey to marinate in the brine for at least 6 hours, or longer. For best results, place the turkey in the brine water the night before you plan to cook it.

  6. Step 6

Before roasting, remove the turkey from the brine water. Completely rinse the inside and outside of the turkey with cold running water to properly rinse away the brine.

  7. Step 7

Prepare your brined turkey with your desired cooking method.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always make sure your turkey is completely thawed before brining.
  • A 5-gallon bucket makes a great container for brining your turkey if you do not have a large enough pot to submerge it.
