Have you ever thought about growing your own pineapples? With a little time and patience, it can be done. You'll only get one pineapple per plant, but still, it's fun watching the plant grow and prosper. Here's how:

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 10" or 12" planting pot filled with potting soil
  • Storebought pineapple
  • Sturdy kitchen knife
  1. Step 1

Using your sturdy kitchen knife, lop off the top of the pineapple about a half inch down from the fronds. Don't cut too close to the top or you won't have a cap to work with.

  2. Step 2

Set the top of the pineapple out to dry for two days. It may sound strange, but it works.

  3. Step 3

On the third day, when the pineapple top is mostly dried out, plant the top up to the green fronds and place in a warm, sunny spot.

  4. Step 4

Water lightly. Keep plant warm and moist; pineapples thrive in warm, humid weather.

  5. Step 5

You should soon begin to see new leaves growing from the inside and spreading out. Eventually, the pineapple will begin growing from the very center upward.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pineapples grow best in warm, humid, sunny climes.
  • Remember to let the pineapple cap dry out thoroughly.
  • Water evenly and keep plant moist.
  • Don't expect overnight results; pineapples take awhile to grow. Enjoy the experience of watching the plant grow.
  • Don't overwater - too much water can be just as damaging to the plant as too little.

on 11/28/2008 This is really cool. I remember my grandmother visiting a LONG time ago. She planted a pineapple top. It grew nicely, but my parents eventually replaced it with roses. :( Thank you for this idea & great how-to! :) 5*****
