Things You'll Need:
- 10" or 12" planting pot filled with potting soil
- Storebought pineapple
- Sturdy kitchen knife
-
Step 1
Using your sturdy kitchen knife, lop off the top of the pineapple about a half inch down from the fronds. Don't cut too close to the top or you won't have a cap to work with.
-
Step 2
Set the top of the pineapple out to dry for two days. It may sound strange, but it works.
-
Step 3
On the third day, when the pineapple top is mostly dried out, plant the top up to the green fronds and place in a warm, sunny spot.
-
Step 4
Water lightly. Keep plant warm and moist; pineapples thrive in warm, humid weather.
-
Step 5
You should soon begin to see new leaves growing from the inside and spreading out. Eventually, the pineapple will begin growing from the very center upward.

on 4/19/2009 this is a great idea for recycling and going green! my father has several pineapple plants as nice borders around some of his palm trees...It looks nice and last year the plants began producing beautiful fruit!

on 11/28/2008 This is really cool. I remember my grandmother visiting a LONG time ago. She planted a pineapple top. It grew nicely, but my parents eventually replaced it with roses. :( Thank you for this idea & great how-to! :) 5*****
