How to Find the Hardware Address on a Mac

Every major piece of computer hardware, including desktops, laptops, printers and wireless devices, has a unique hardware address attached to it. This hardware address is also known as a MAC address, which stands for Media Access Control address. The MAC address is normally assigned by the hardware's manufacturer, and is then used to identify the hardware when it connects to a network. This article explains how to look up the MAC hardware address of a Macintosh computer.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mac running OS X 10.4 or later
  1. Step 1

    Open a new Finder window by clicking on the icon in the dock.

  2. Step 2

    Navigate to the "Utilities" folder, which is located in the "Applications" section of the Mac hard drive.

  3. Step 3

    Double-click on the "Network Utility" icon to open up the networking program.

  4. Step 4

    Click on the "Info" tab in the upper left corner of the application window.

  5. Step 5

    In the "Network Interface" drop-down menu, select the network adapter for which you wish to find the address. The MAC address of the adapter will then appear below.
