Things You'll Need:
- phone
- internet
- desire to achieve a fitness goal
-
Step 1
Decide that you want a personal trainer to help you achieve your fitness goals and be clear what your goals are. For example, do you want to lose weight, build muscle, or increase your strength?
-
Step 2
Choose the type of location you would like your workout to be. Will you want a trainer that comes to your home? If so you may need some equipment. Do you belong to a gym and would like to train there? Or, maybe a private environment outside the home will be better suited for you.
-
Step 3
Start by asking friends or family members for a personal trainer referral. There is a pretty good chance someone you know has a personal trainer and they just don't talk about it, even if they love it.
-
Step 4
If you get nowhere with your friends look to the internet next. Type in "personal trainer" along with your city name. You should now have a list of businesses in your area that offer personal trainers. Search the ones with websites. Often there is a vast amount of information on each business site, such as what kind of facility they are and many even list their personal trainers with biographies so that you can learn about their certifications and experience.
-
Step 5
Make the call. Make a list of different trainers or facilities that seem like good matches for your needs and start to call the ones that interest you most. Ask to set up a consultation or possibly a free session.
-
Step 6
VIsit the facility or set up the meeting with a trainer who may come to your home. Consider factors such as proximity to your home or workplace, facility cleanliness, staff appearance and attitude, and equipment availability.
-
Step 7
You should now have a good deal of information to make a decision. Although affordability may affect your decision, do not let it be the deciding factor. If you are serious about achieving your goals choose the trainer that will be the most likely to help you do so as long as you make the commitment, even if you have to pay more it will be worth it.
-
Step 8
Purchase a package to make a commitment. Don't expect to see results in only a few sessions. Purchase at least 6 weeks of sessions, more if you have the finances and trust the trainer or business you have hired.
-
Step 9
Start training. Schedule your first session right away, don't put it off. You are on your way to achieving your fitness goals.

on 7/14/2009 Aloha from Maui! Good info. As a trainer, I too agree with you. It's very "personal". One should feel completely confident when hiring a fitness professional. Our community is very small and word get's out fast through the coconut wire if you good, great or not! I encourage all my clients to come for a visit and get to know me. Please feel free to contact me through www.suzietrainsmaui.com if you'd like to share and support each other. Keep up the great work!

on 2/12/2009 Great information - anyone searching for trainers should look for independent web based sites like Trainerfit.net and others to find a trainer too. These sites generally provide a more comprehensive list of Trainers available in your area and are more or less neutral as it relates to it's trainers. They can really help you make an informed decision.
