A Christmas tree is often the focal point of a room during the holidays, where friends and family gather to exchange gifts and create new memories. This article will explain how to decorate a Christmas tree, step by step.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Christmas Tree
  • Tree stand
  • Lights
  • Ornaments and Decorations
  • Tinsel
  • Tree Skirt
  1. Step 1

    String the lights.

Once the Christmas tree is positioned in the room, you will want to string the lights onto the branches. If you have a pre-lit artificial tree, you can skip this step. The first thing you should do is plug in the lights to make sure they are working properly. You will need approximately one strand of lights per foot of tree, so you'll need around six strands of lights for a 6 foot tree.

Starting at the bottom, begin winding the lights around the tree, nestling them into the branches for added depth. Keep the tree lit as you work so that you can see how you're doing.

  2. Step 2

    Add the garland and tinsel.

If you plan on using a garland or tinsel, be sure to place them on the tree after the lights have been strung and before you start adding ornaments. Wrap the garland loosely around the tree, creating soft folds against the branches.

  3. Step 3

Begin adding the ornaments and decorations. If you have any ornaments that require placement next to the lights, start with those first, evenly spacing them out on the tree. This will allow them to sparkle and shine in front of the lights. After this is done, you can start adding the other ornaments. If you have any heavy or breakable ornaments or decorations, place them on the top half of the tree so that they will be safe from little hands and/or paws.

Position larger pieces on the lower half of the tree where they will look proportionate to the rest of the tree.

  4. Step 4

    Top with a tree topper.

Whether you prefer a star, angel or some other decoration, topping your Christmas tree with an appropriate tree topper will finish off the look. Tree toppers draw the eye up and help draw attention to other ornaments closer to the top.

  5. Step 5

    Lay down the tree skirt.

Once you put the finishing touches on your Christmas tree, run a vacuum under and around it to remove any lost pine needles and then spread out the tree skirt underneath. It should be large enough to hide the tree stand, but shouldn't extend much farther than the bottom branches. Once the tree skirt is in place, you are ready to add presents and other goodies.
