Buying merchandise online can be hazardous to your credit card. First consumers must make sure the site is legitimate, and secure. Remember, not all shopping sites are created equally. Most
online shoppers can't tell the difference between a dream shopping site or one that will cause credit nightmares for months, even years. That is exactly why consumers who are considering purchasing merchandise
online should follow these very important shopping tips.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Check Site Security. Never make a purchase on a website until you are certain the site is secure. Check for indicators such as a lock icon on the browsers status bar or a URL that begins with "https." The "s" indicates that the site is secure.

  2. Step 2

Manufacturers Background. For consumers who are shopping the
online version of a legitimate brick and mortar shop legitimacy is
not a problem. Beware of a new site that does not list a physical "real world" address or telephone number so that customers may contact them. This might be a bogus site. Created to steal personal or financial information.

  3. Step 3

Use a Credit Card. Credit cards have built in fraud protection which cover online purchases. Never use your debit card on-line. These cards do not have the buyer protection or coverage like credit cards. And a hacker could potentially clean out the owners bank account.

  4. Step 4

Use Paypal. Many consumers prefer not to use a credit card. They should consider using paypal for all online purchases. Paypal does offer buyers
some online buyer protection. Certainly more protection than a debit card or paying cash.

  5. Step 5

Beware "Phishing" Scams. A consumers phishing radar should instantly
zero in on any suspicious companies who contact them through email offering bargain prices or great below retail deals on popular items. Especially if they ask for personal or financial information before purchasing. And consumers should never click on unfamiliar links to unknown sites to purchase a bargain item. The site might be bogus, setup to steal consumers financial information.
