Wearing fake buns, ponytails, falls, and other hair pieces is a great way to change up your look from day to day without spending a lot of money on salon visits. It's also a great way to save your hair from damaging heat styling processes. Whether you need a fancy updo for a wedding, or you just need something for every day, this guide will teach you how to create the perfect ponytail.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wide toothed comb
  • Fine toothed comb
  • Water, pomade, hair grease or gel
  • Ouchless hair elastics
  • Bobby Pins
  • Fake ponytail with drawstring and/or comb attachments
  1. Step 1

Shampoo, condition, and towel dry your hair

  2. Step 2

While hair is still damp, gently detangle the strands, while combing the hair back from the forehead and up from the nape of the neck using your wide toothed comb.

  3. Step 3

Hold hair in one hand, and elastic in the other. Wrap elastic around the hair, pull hair through, wrap elastic around again, and pull hair half way through- so ends are tucked under the elastic to form a bun.

  4. Step 4

Make sure hair is smooth, and completely without bumps up top. If hair is very bumpy, take down bun, and start again from Step 2. Apply water or pomade to aid in smoothing and securing hair with fine toothed comb.

Allow hair to dry in tight bun. Pick up fake ponytail, and insert the top comb that is attached to the piece into the hair just above the elastic around your bun. Pull the "pocket" of the ponytail over your bun, and pull the drawstring until secure. Insert the bottom comb just below the bun.

Wrap drawstring around base of ponytail, tuck under ponytail elastic. Gently comb out the ponytail if desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • This is a great "protective style" to keep your hair from getting dried out during the harsh winter or summer months.
  • Find a ponytail from a beauty supply store that closely matches your own hair's texture, color, and shine. Extremely shiny ponytails on dull natural hair are a dead giveaway.
  • If you can't find a ponytail that matches your natural color, you can always use a semi permanent dye on your own hair to match the hair piece. If you use human hair extensions, you can dye the piece to match your hair!
  • Detangle hair pieces by spritzing a little apple cider vinegar mixed with water on them and then combing gently. This will release the tangles and lengthen the life of your store bought locks!
