eating for under 10 dollars a week is no feat. But eating HEALTHY is a challenge!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • OPTIONAL:
  • Initial investmet of a large bag of brown rice
  • Outdoor hunting of fish and birds
  • YOULL NEED:
  • unlimited free water
  1. Step 1

Buy apples oranges and bananas in the largest quantity for under 3 dollars
having variety is good but any one of these in a large quantity provides the sugars your brain needs to keep functioning at top level. farmers markets generally have the best deals and are usually fresher and organic. at least one orange or lemon a week.

Fregan note: super markets always have lots out back.
Forager note: crab apples are NOT poisonous nor are ANY type of wild apple.

  2. Step 2

Buy miso soup paste of any variety, but the more organic ingredients the better. I always go with red. this should be around 2-3 dollars.
Buy one stick of salted butter should be no more than 2 dollars
THINGS TO KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED FOR:
    free honey packets
    free cream
    free crackers
    free butter
Fregan note: milk is a waste of time the heavier the cream the better. Sugar is not really useful to the human body honey and maple syrup are though.

  3. Step 3

with your remaining money buy as much chicken (with skin) as you can. bake this chicken at home remembering to conserve the juices ( no spit cooking) then boil together the stick of butter the miso soup (leamon juice if possable) and the whole chicken (remove bones only after boiling) and then can the soup in medium sized cans preferably one for each day.

Forager note: if you are substituting meat with wild game PLEASE cook extra well done.

  4. Step 4

Eat the soup in the morning when you feel the hungriest (if your not REALY hungry wait until you are) along with a glass of warm water (White Pine needles make a great tea) and then try and take a nap at 3:00 when you wake up wait until you are hungry and then have an apple and some more warm water/tea. if you get hungry take a warm bath instead.

  5. Step 5

if you find yourself particularly strapped for cash one week the best option is to fast. fasting a week is not hard unless you break fast. the first day of fasting drink warm water or plain tea when you feel hungriest. the second day should be spent napping because during this cycle the body will eat its own muscle tissue if any energy is needed( AVOID ACTIVITY). On the third day you should not feel hungry any more because your body will have switched into fat burning mode drink plenty of warm water or plain tea this state can be kept up for 3 days and on the weekend progress back into eating soup and fruit and whatever else you can get.

Tips & Warnings
  • lots of stuff is cheeper in foreign markets.
  • go to your library and read up on wild foods in your area.
  • use excess money to buy liquid vitamins b12,d,c,a, calcium, and iron.
  • drink tons of warm water.
  • listening to slow music with lots of bass is helpful when hungry
  • do not semi fast.
  • do not remain on this diet for more time than absolutely needed.
  • do not over exert yourself while on this diet.
  • read all ingredients of what you buy. MSG goes by many names and will make you FEEL full artificially. This is bad because it will work against the body's rearranging of digestion cycles so you will feel just as hungry on the 4th day as you did on the first.

on 7/28/2009 Well, I think it would make a lot of sense to instead of buying organic miso soup and vegtables, you should consider pasta. It is cheap and, although not as healthy, healthier than fasting or sleeping in place of food. Rice is also a great option. And jturner makes a good point- if you are super strapped for cash, you should be looking for ways out of that situation.

on 7/18/2009 This is the craziest thing I've read in a long time. If you are so strapped for money (as many of us are)....you are in TROUBLE and need to look for a way to turn things around. It definitely means that you can't afford to spend a day lying around the house and sleeping.

You might nee to look for a job, or take a second part time job, or work extra hours, enroll in some kind of program, look for a source of emergency funds...whatever. The point is that this is precisely the time to be more proactive...and that means that you need to take care of yourself and eat for energy because you're going to be working harder

Conversely if you spend your time lying around because you have so little food energy....you are only going to make things worse.

Remember that there is no shame in needing to go to a food bank because of a temporary setback while you are struggling to turn things aro...
