Things You'll Need:
- plunger
- rag
-
Step 1
The first step for clearing a sink drain with a plunger is to take out the sink stopper. The technique you will need to use to remove the sink stopper varies. Some stoppers pop right out. Other stoppers need to be rotated in order to take them out. With older stoppers, you may need to remove the pivot rod first before the stopper will release.
-
Step 2
The next step on how to clear a sink drain with a plunger is to block the sink overflow opening with a rag. This step is important if you are to get good suction power with your plunger. Wet the rag before stuffing it over the overflow opening so that the pressure from the plunger doesn’t knock it back out.
-
Step 3
Now it’s time to place the plunger over the clogged drain. Run some water into the sink so that the rubber cup of the plunger is immersed in water. The water will create a seal around the plunger so that you can plunge more efficiently.
-
Step 4
The last step for clearing a sink drain is to move the plunger straight up and down. This should be a rapid, repeated motion. Plunge until the clogged drain is clear.

on 11/29/2008 I've always wondered how you use one of those things! I may try it next time instead of calling the plumber. Thanks!
