TRICKS OF THE TRADE BY A FORMER SWIMMING POOL SERVICE PROFESSIONAL.
YOU'VE FOUND BROWN METALLIC STAINS ON YOUR POOL DECK OR SIDEWALK. NOW YOU CAN SAFELY AND QUICKLY REMOVE THOSE STAINS YOURSELF

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Muriatic acid
  • stiff pole brush
  • garden hose
  • small drill and 1/8th bit
  • safety goggles
  1. Step 1

Bobby pins, iron in your fertilizer, metal trinkets and who knows what did it will leave marks on concrete surfaces...this is how to remove 99% of them safely and without damage

  2. Step 2

Put on your goggles. Drill a small 1/8" or so size hole into the center of the top of the bottle of muriatic acid. This makes it a squirt bottle.

  3. Step 3

Wet down the area that you want to clean up. Have the hose handy so you can pick it up right away after putting the acid down.

  4. Step 4

Pick up the bottle...carefully invert it over the stains and squeeze. DO A SMALL SECTION AT A TIME. Spray acid over the spots WITHIN A FEW SECONDS. Set the acid down and QUICKLY grab the brush to DISTRIBUTE the acid over the area. The acid does the removal...not the brush!

  5. Step 5

The concrete will start to bubble and foam. Pick up the hose and wash off the acid after ONLY 5-6 seconds. This is usually enough time to remove the stain. The acid is neutralized by the water but hose it off toward or into the deck drain. If you have no deck drain hose it into the pool...unless there's no grass nearby to kill.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you get good at spot removal you may want to try doing your entire deck. This should be done with at least 2 people. The deck, especially Kool Deck will clean up nicely.
  • The longer you leave the acid on the more it lightens the color of the deck
  • Warning: Don't try this on colored / stamped concrete. The sealer and color will come off as fast as the rust stain does...leaving bare concrete! Yikes
  • Be super careful with acid
  • Don't breathe the fumes!!!
  • Try to get help doing this the first time
