So you're bored with your desktop background, and want to change it. Learn exactly what you need to know.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer running Windows Vista
  1. Step 1

If you haven't found a background yet, see the Resources section for an article on how to do that. Alternatively, you can choose from one of the sample pictures.

  2. Step 2

Right-click in an empty spot on your desktop. From the menu that pops up, select "Personalize." In the right column of the window that appears, the second option down should be "Desktop Background." Click the link.

  3. Step 3

Click the "Browse" button, and find the location of the picture you want to use. Click the picture, and then click "Open." If you want to select from the sample pictures, then look to the left column in the window. Click on "Computer." Then in the right column, double-click on the "Users" folder, then double-click on the "Public" folder, then "Public Pictures," and finally, "Sample Pictures." Click on one of the pictures displayed, and click "Open."

  4. Step 4

If there were other picture in the folder, you get a close-up view of them in the section below the "Browse" button. Underneath that section are three options for how the picture should be displayed. The first option forces the picture to fit within the desktop regardless of its size or shape. This can cause distortion or bring out defects in the picture if it's of low resolution. The second option repeats the picture both horizontally and vertically across the page. This option is best for certain small pictures, such as patterns. The final option leaves the picture as it is, but adds a solid color border around it to fill out the blank space. To see how each one looks, click the option button beside each one, and then look at your desktop to see if you like it. When you're finished, click "OK."

Tips & Warnings
  • The first option for displaying pictures shouldn't be used unless the picture is the correct ratio for your desktop. This keeps the picture form being distorted, but enlarges or shrinks it to fit the desktop. Use a paint program to find out what the resolution is, and to change it if necessary.
