How to Save Money

Knowing how to save money is useful to everyone. Save money and you save your life.

Steps to Save Money

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

State what you save money for. What is it that you want to have? A house? A new guitar? You can have both long-term and short-term goals.

  2. Step 2

Pay your debts as soon as possible.

  3. Step 3

Set a time-frame. Make sure they are realistic.

  4. Step 4

Set a savings target per month or week.

  5. Step 5

Watch how much you spend. Keep all your receipts and calculate each month's expenditures.

  6. Step 6

Review your spending records. Ask yourself what you can do without. No doubt there are little things you spend on like a hobby, a trip to the movies, etc. that you can do without.

  7. Step 7

Save money to a bank. Open an interest-bearing account for your savings. Avoid using credit cards. Save your coin change.

Tips & Warnings
  • Exaggerate your expenses but underestimate your earnings and savings.
  • Share what you can with family and friends; in return they'll share with you (e.g. clothes, food, etc.). This will save money on buying things.
  • Save money that you get outside of your regular income.
  • Do not save money only to indulge “once in a while” in some expensive whim. This defeats the whole point of saving money. If you want to buy a gift for yourself, make it cheap.
  • Do not risk your health just for the sake of saving money. Skipping vitamins and shots would cause more expenses, not to mention sorrow and loss in the long term.
