There is likely to be a lot of tinsel decorations this Christmas season. The trend is popular once again, particularly with the baby boomers. After all, many of them once owned one of those infamous aluminum trees, which have also made a comeback. Luckily, tinsel decorations are not that difficult to make. Because of that, they can provide a fun project for the entire family. Below are instructions for creating a tinsel wreath out of metallic ribbon.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Metallic ribbon (3 to 4 inches wide) Ribbon shredder Floral wire Wire cutters Styrofoam wreath frame Spray paint
  1. Step 1

Figure out the size and color of tinsel wreath you want to make. Wreaths generally range between 12 and 24 inches in diameter.

  2. Step 2

Purchase supplies if you don't already have everything you need on hand. This project will use between 20 and 40 yards of metallic ribbon.

  3. Step 3

Cut the floral wire into lengths that are roughly 4 inches long. Go longer if you want because wire can be trimmed whenever needed.

  4. Step 4

Spray paint the Styrofoam wreath frame. Use a color that matches or is close to the color of the metallic ribbon being used.

  5. Step 5

Cut the ribbon into 5 to 6 inch strips, depending on how full you want the tinsel pompom to be. Do not make strips smaller than 5 inches or longer than 7 inches. It will make much more ribbon for small pompoms, and the wreath may end up tighter-looking than what is desired. Pompoms that are too large for the wreath frame will look haphazard.

  6. Step 6

Shred ribbon starting about 3/4 inches above one end of the ribbon strip. Put the ribbon through the shredder, stopping about 3/4 inches from the other end of the strip of ribbon. Use coarse shredding, fine shredding or a combination of both to make the tinsel pompoms. Test various types to decide which pompom model you like best.

  7. Step 7

Fold shredded ribbon strips in half. Gather up the ends and tie them off with the pieces of floral wire that were cut in Step 3 above. Fluff the pompoms as they are made. Trim any excess wire length off before putting the pompom into the tree frame. Continue the process until all of the ribbon strips are used.

  8. Step 8

Use the sharp end of the wire to push each pompom into the Styrofoam wreath. Start at the outside edge of the frame and work inward. If you don't have enough pompoms to complete the wreath, make more, repeating Steps 5 and 6 until the wreath is complete.

  9. Step 9

Decorate the wreath with miniature ornaments, flowers or berries if desired. Wire the pieces so that they can be pushed into the wire frame or simply glue them into place.

Tips & Warnings
  • Metallic ribbon comes in a number of colors, such as gold, silver, copper, bronze, black, red and green. A mixture of fine and coarse shredded pompoms works the best for wreaths.
  • Be careful with sharp wires.
