Make Yogurt

Yogurt is a "natural" fermentation of pasteurization of milk. It is, in fact, fairly simple to make your own homemade yogurt, even without a yogurt maker. Follow the steps below to learn how you can make this healthy milk product for yourself.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fresh milk
  • Real yogurt
  1. Step 1

Heat your milk till it is between 90 degrees to 110 degrees warm or "hand hot." Heat some fresh milk to "hand hot," about 90 deg. to 110 deg.

  2. Step 2

Stir 2 to 3 tablespoons of yogurt into the warmed milk. Pour it into a wide-mouthed bottle, ideally a thermos jar.

  3. Step 3

Place the mixture overnight (at least approximately 8 to 14 hours) in a location where it will be maintained at a warm temperature of between 41 to 49 degrees Celsius. The bacteria in the yogurt will proliferate and ferment the milk into fresh yogurt.

  4. Step 4

Once prepared, refrigerate immediately. Save some of your yogurt for your next homemade batch. Flavor your yogurt with honey, fruit and nuts.

Tips & Warnings
  • For extra nutrients, add some non-fat, dry milk after you heat the fresh milk
  • If you find that the milk has not thickened overnight, this may be because the cow it was obtained from was treated penicillin; this in turn destroys the bacteria, preventing the fermentation of your yogurt.
