Things You'll Need:

  • cheap electric hair clippers
  • shopvac
  • scissors with sharp blades
  1. Step 1

Sit down with your dog first and pet them a lot. scratch behind his ears so that he feels love and affection. Dogs who get affection behave better than dogs who never get scratched. It's easier to shave a matted dog without being attacked if he feels like he can trust you.

  2. Step 2

Turn on the hair clippers and just hold them while you pet your dog. Put the longest comb attachment on your clippers, usually it's 1/2 an inch long. Begin at the top of the dog's head and clip the hair by running it through the dog's hair and letting the hair fall to the ground.

  3. Step 3

It's best to clip your dog's hair outside, but be sure to make sure it's not windy otherwise you'll get dog hair in your mouth or eyes. Use the shopvac to suck up the big mats and chunks of dog hair.

  4. Step 4

Pay special attention to the hair around the dog's neck and belly if you're trying to help him beat the heat. If you're trying to help get rid of and prevent mats you might find that the comb attachment won't get through the dreadlocks, so you need to use your scissors and cut the hair close to the scalp. if you're afraid of cutting his skin, you might feel better removing the comb attachment and just cutting that hair down to the scalp. It's not likely that you'll cut him, but be careful nonetheless.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can prevent matting by brushing your dog frequently. When you start to see a mat forming, if you can't brush it out, cut it off with scissors before it reaches the scalp.
  • The more you brush and shave your dog, the better he will behave. he will learn to look forward to the attention and the good feeling that comes from a handsome grooming job.
  • Don't try shaving a cat. Seriously.
