Cats can learn to fetch!
Cats can learn to fetch!

Cats are very smart creatures and make wonderful pets! Like dogs, many cats can learn to play fetch and they can learn cat tricks. It just takes a willing feline and a patient owner.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cat toys
  • Cat treats
  • Cat nip
  • Lots of praise and encouragement
  1. Step 1

The first step in teaching your cat to play fetch is to use a toy that they like. It needs to be a cat toy that is made of safe material and fits well in their mouth.

  2. Step 2

Sit down on the ground with your cat to teach your cat to play fetch. Throw the cat toy. Give your cat praise the closer they get to the toy. If the pick the toy up give them and gently pat the ground. Say come here (their name).

  3. Step 3

Cover the toy in cat nip to encourage your cat to come near it. Give your cat a cat treat when they put the cat toy in their mouth and come towards you. It is okay if they do not bring it all the way back. Reward them for making part of the journey to you.

  4. Step 4

Throw the cat toy again for them to fetch. Give them a treat and praise when they come a little bit closer with the cat toy. Keep doing this process until they are bringing the cat toy completely back to you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be patient and kind to your cat during training. Learning a new trick can be hard. Make this an opportunity to bond with your pet!

on 12/16/2008 I have had two cats that fetch. Paper Wad Poofy and BooBoo. I don't think I trained them tho. Nothing like having her drop a spit soaked paper wad on your chest at four in the morning! Bleechh! (Love my kitties!)5*
