How to Paint a Laminate Countertop

Learning the proper way to paint a laminate countertop.

Things You'll Need:

  • 220 grit sandpaper
  • 400 grit sandpaper
  • Denatured alcohol
  • Zinsser
  • Wash cloth (rag)
  • Oil based primer sealant (Bullseye 1.2.3.)
  • Rust-oleum oil based paint
  1. Step 1

    Preparing the counter-top

    You must first prepare the counter-top, by washing it down with hot soapy water and a clean wash cloth to eliminate scum and debris. After using soap rinse and allow to dry.

  2. Step 2

    Using the 220 grit sandpaper lightly sand the laminate counter top until smooth. Dampen a clean wash cloth with denatured alcohol to remove dust and debris from counter top. Allow five to ten minutes to dry.

  3. Step 3

    Applying Primer

    Now use two quarts zinsser and bull’s-eye 1.2.3. Oil based primer sealer on countertop. Apply according to manufacturer’s instructions. During all procedures be careful not to get anything on counter top while wet. Allow to thoroughly dry.

  4. Step 4

    After completely dried and cured, use the 400 grit sandpaper and give a light sanding until smooth. Remember to use a clean cloth dampened with denatured alcohol to remove dust and debris from counter top. Allow to dry.

  5. Step 5

    Now it’s time to choose the color paint for counter top. Choose color from the Rust-oleum oil based paint products. You’ll need approximately 2 quarts, of coarse this depends on the size of counter top. First you need to thin one quart of the paint according to directions on label.

  6. Step 6

    Apply first coat according to directions, allow to dry and cure thoroughly. This could take up to two days. After dry repeat sanding process with 400 grit and don’t forget the alcohol.

  7. Step 7

    Using 2nd quart of oil based paint apply second coat to counter, allow to dry according to instructions on the label (up to a week), sand and clean.

  8. Step 8

    Finally last step

    After completely dried and cured , apply third coat if needed. Otherwise, apply three to five coats spray lacquer according to directions on can. Careful not to get anything on the counter top while wet, Allow time to thoroughly dry. You’re done.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you follow these instructions carefully to avoid bubbling.
  • The drying and curing is very important.
