How to Install a Shower Curtain Rod Into Drywall

Shower rods come in two main types: spring-loaded, which you twist to lengthen and are held in place by tension; and permanently installed, which you must install with screws into the wall. The spring-loaded rods are easier to install but are not as sturdy as permanently installed rods if you plan to hang heavy, drying clothes or towels over the rod. Therefore, permanently installed rods are preferable; the installation is not very difficult. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the shower curtain up to see how high the rod must be so that the curtain will hang about 6 inches past the top edge of the tub. Make a pencil mark at the top of the curtain. Measure from the back wall to the mark and from the ceiling to the mark so you know where to make the mark on the other side of the tub. The rod should align horizontally with the front edge of the tub so that the curtain will hang straight when it hangs outside the tub.

Place a bracket over one of the marks and draw round pencil circles where the holes are for the screws. Remove the bracket and use the appropriate size drill bit required for the plastic anchors to drill the holes where you marked the circles.

    • 3

Place the plastic anchors into the drilled holes. You may have to tap them in with a hammer. Align the bracket screw holes with the anchors and screw the bracket to the wall.

    • 4

Check the measurements from the back wall to the installed bracket and from the the ceiling to the installed bracket. Remeasure the mark on the other wall to ensure the rod will be level before installing the second bracket. Install the second bracket as you did the first one.

    • 5

Place the rod into one bracket and then into the second one. Place the shower curtain rings over the rod. Put a ring through each hole in the top of the shower curtain and lock each ring.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of plastic anchors, you may use molly bolts.

  • While screws without anchors will hold the rod, it is wise to affix the rod in a more sturdy fashion in case someone ever hangs clothing or a heavy, wet towel over the rod.
