Stop Payment On A Check

When learning to write checks one key thing to learn is how to stop payment on a check. A stop payment order on a check allows you to cancel a check you have written before it is cashed.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Call your bank and request stop payment. You will need your bank account information and check number, along with the amount of the check. Many banks have online services that allow the request to be done via internet. Keep track of the date and time the request was made. Also note if you talked with any person. Print of a confirmation page if done online.

  2. Step 2

If you are unable to get the check back it is important to send a written request to the bank. A telephone request is only valid for up to 14 days. A written request is followed for 6 months. Checks should be void within 6 months but sometimes this is not followed.

  3. Step 3

You will be charged a fee for each time you stop payment on a check. You must resubmit the request every six months until the check is returned.

Tips & Warnings
  • To prevent a check to cashed in after 6 months write "Not valid after six months." in the memo line. This does not protect you a 100% but it does help.
  • You can not stop payment on a certified or cashier's check.
