How to Spend a Day in Seattle, Washington

There is enough to do in Seattle to last a year, but what if you only have a few days to visit the city? Not to worry, just relax and enjoy Seattle's favorite spots one step at a time. Visit the library, take in the smells of Pike Place Market, drink a cup of Seattle's famous coffee, take a ferry ride and see an independent film at an old theater. You will find that Seattle's rich culture and friendly people shine through the misty weather.

Instructions

    • 1

Explore the Central Library, located at 1000 4th Avenue. The 362,987 square foot building is an architectural masterpiece that can fit almost one and a half million books. Don't miss the all red floor (walls, ceiling, floor and walls are red), accessible from a red staircase in the middle of the third floor.

    • 2

Get a bite of fresh fish at Pike Place Market, known as "the soul of Seattle," at 1531 Western Ave in downtown. Opened on August 17, 1907, Pike Place has been a quality farmers' market for over a hundred years.

    • 3

Visit the Chittenden Locks in Ballard (3015 NW 51st Street) and watch the sockeye, chinook, coho and steelhead salmon migrate up the fish ladder.

    • 4

Walk around the Space Needle and take pictures. A trip to the top offers a spectacular view of the city, but is expensive and crowded.

    • 5

Take the ferry to Bainbridge Island. The ferry leaves regularly from 801 Alaskan Way Pier 52, and is the best and cheapest way to see the harbor. Get off and stroll or bike around the quaint island, but be prepared for hills. The ferry ride takes just over an hour round trip.

    • 6

Warm up with a cup of coffee. Starbucks was started in Seattle, and the city also boasts hundreds of independently owned coffee shops. If you are visiting in September look up Coffee Fest Seattle for a taste of Seattle's best coffee and tea.

    • 7

See a movie at the Harvard Exit Theatre on Capitol Hill. Built in 1925, the intimate theatre has just two screens and shows a variety of classic, foreign and independent films. The theatre also hosts the annual Seattle International Film Festival and the Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.

Tips & Warnings

  • Seattle has a great bus system, the problem is that bus stops are poorly marked and usually do not have maps. Find out in advance what bus you need to take and where it stops. It rains a lot so bring an umbrella and rain coat.
