Where in California to Go Swimming With Dolphins

Have you ever seen a movie or TV show where a character was swimming right along with a dolphin and wished that you could do the same? The United States government prohibits this activity in any type of marine sanctuary. If you live in California, though, you can swim with dolphins at two locations. These programs allow you to interact with, swim with and even train dolphins. Doing so will be a moment you and your family will never forget.

Instructions

Visit Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo. There, you can take part in the Dolphin Discovery Program. Dolphin Discovery allows you to learn more about these fascinating creatures, including what food they eat and how they maneuver in the water. Instead of watching a movie or sitting in a classroom, though, you will be in the water right next to the dolphins. While doing so, you will have the opportunity to pet, feed and, of course, swim right next to them. Prices fluctuate throughout the year so visit the web site (see Resources below) for more information.

Take part in the SeaWorld Dolphin Interaction Program. Held in San Diego, this program puts you in the water alongside dolphins. Much like Dolphin Discovery, you will be taught basic information about dolphins while you are in the water with them. You will be allowed to feed the dolphins and get face to face with them as they swim right up next to you. The SeaWorld Dolphin Interaction Program is for ages 6 and up.

Become a dolphin Trainer for a Day at SeaWorld in San Diego. Here, you will do more than simply swim next to a dolphin. The Trainer for a Day program will teach you more about how dolphins communicate with one another. You will be responsible for taking care of them (with help, of course) and even see a few dolphin tricks. The biggest difference between this program and the Dolphin Interaction Program is the time you spend with the dolphins. While you'll be in the water for about an hour during Dolphin Interaction, the Trainer for a Day program last about five hours.

Tips & Warnings

  • Six Flags in Vallejo and SeaWorld in San Diego are the only two places where you can swim with dolphins in California. You can see dolphins on a safari (see Resources below) but you cannot swim with them during these trips. If you live in California and you want to explore more options, consider swimming with dolphins in Mexico (see Resources below).
