How to Handcuff A Prisoner

When you become a police officer, learning to handcuff a person properly is important for your safety. You need to ensure that the person you have handcuffed can't get out of them. The proper way to use handcuffs is simple and should be employed every time handcuffs are used.

      Have the suspect stand straight up. Do not allow him to lean up against the car or any other item.

      Grab the person's hands and place them behind her back. If necessary or feasible, you can put them in the front.

      Push the bow of the handcuff against the left wrist of the person you have secured. Doing this will pivot the bow and allow you to secure it through the various tracks in the bow.

      Push the bow on the right side of the handcuffs against the right wrist of the person and secure that cuff.

    • 5

      Make sure that the handcuffed hands are facing each other.

    • 6

      When you have successfully gotten the handcuffs on both hands, tighten the cuffs securely without cutting off blood circulation.

  • Don't handcuff anyone in the back if they are pregnant, have a medical condition or are a juvenile.
