How to Build a Window Canopy

A window canopy offers a shield from light rain and shade from the powerful UV rays of the sun. Besides protecting the window area and the paint, the canopy also protects the interiors from being damaged by rain and direct sunlight. Since the window canopy is fixed to the wall with brackets, it is an easy and cost effective way to dramatically improve the appearance of the window without compromising on the beauty of the exterior.

• Measuring Tape Chalk marker Screen made of canvas nylon in an attractive color to enhance the window appearance Brackets 4 large brackets and 10 small brackets ( You won't need this exact amount, however it is better to err on the side of sufficient material) Screws and screw drivers Plywood to make frame Hammer and nails Drill and appropriate bits Handsaw Sandpaper Protective goggles

1. Check whether the portion of the wall is free of obstruction and has no gutter, light wiring or other ornamentation. Next check if the projection of the canopy does not have an obstruction like a patio wall roof fence or tree.

2. Use the measuring tape and chalk marker to get accurate results. Measure the width of the canopy both against the wall and for the projection. Get suitable brackets to hold the canopy up. Measure the height over the window. Ideally, add 12 inches to your measurement to get a better result. Measure the height above the window from which the canopy should project. Find a flat surface to fix the frame. This is usually difficult on brick walls.

3. Make a plywood frame in the shape of a rhombus using plywood. (Apply the previous measurements.) Make the frame smooth using sandpaper. Stretch the screening material and fix it to the frame with nails and a hammer. Mount the frame on a flat part of the wall above the window and stretch in forward.

4. Fix two large brackets to the side of the frame to hold it up accurately. Fix the smaller brackets at equal distances between the large brackets on the side. Use the electric drill and screws to fix the brackets to the wall and to the two ends of the frame.

5. Remove the screen if required and make adjustments so that it fits accurately and attractively over the brackets and enhances the appearance of the window.

Tips & Warnings

• Always wear protective goggles when making the frame. Always cut the plywood with a handsaw because electric tools do not give accurate results. Using material for the screen that compliments the color of the exterior of the building will make the canopy and the window look much prettier.

• Make sure the screws on the window are fastened tightly to the brackets so that the canopy does not fall.
