Learn how to saddle a horse correctly to keep yourself and the horse safe!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • saddle and saddle pad
  1. Step 1

Grab the saddle in a way you can swing it up onto the horse. If you are a smaller person the best way maybe to put the stirrup and cinches on the seat of the saddle to keep them out of the way. You want to place the saddle so the swells are directly on the horses withers. To far ahead or to far back will make the horse sore and not work properly, and maybe even buck.

  2. Step 2

You always want to start with the front cinch first. This way if the horse spooks, the saddle has a better chance of staying on, or will come off so it doesnt drag. Then you can cinch the back cinch or breast collor it doesnt matter. But when unsaddleing always undo the front cinch last.

  3. Step 3

Dont tighten the cinches all the way right at first. Lead them off a few steps before tightening the rest of the way. Also when first cinching up a horse they will fill thier bellies with air, so you may have to retighten the cinch after the saddle has been on him for a few minutes.
