Things You'll Need:
- cigar
- drink
-
Step 1
The first step is selecting your cigar. If you're new to cigar smoking, then I suggest starting with a good cigar. Starting with a cheap cigar can leave you with a very bitter taste (literally) and turn you off to the entire process. Start with a good brand or brands, then work your way down to see if you can appreciate less expensive cigars. For a flavorful cigar that is not overpowering, I would recommend one of the Dominican Republic cigars like Macanudo, Montecristo, Partagas or Romeo Y Julieta. Less expensive cigars that are of good quality can be found from Nicaragua and Honduras.
-
Step 2
Remove the cigar from its wrapper or glass case but do not remove the paper ring around the cigar. The ring keeps the cigar from unraveling. Using your cigar clipper or knife, cut off about 1/8 of an inch from the end of the cigar.
-
Step 3
Using large wooden matches, roast the other end of the cigar evenly while turning the cigar. Do not draw on the cigar while roasting. Use two or three matches to roast the cigar tip until you start getting a nice glow.
-
Step 4
Slowly puff on the cigar until you get a good draw without inhaling. The rule is that you do not inhale cigars, but to each his own. It is sufficiently pleasurable to simply puff on the cigar for its flavor. Let the cigar rest in between puffs so that the burn continues to roast the tobacco. If you puff the cigar furiously you will notice that the flavor will turn less mellow or smooth. Allow the cherry to roast the cigar in between puffs and the flavor will be much improved.
-
Step 5
While smoking your cigar, you should enjoy a glass of your favorite spirit. A nice Scotch or Bourbon perfectly complements a fine cigar. If you don't drink alcohol, a nice cup of coffee does the same trick.
