One easy way to decorate your dining table for Thanksgiving is by creating your own place mats. The added touch of your own creativity will make your guests feel even more welcome. The process is fairly simple. The hardest part is deciding exactly what you want on your place mats. Creating Thanksgiving place mats is also a wonderful activity for children, especially older children. Instead of using place mats anyone can find in a store, take the time to make your own unique place mats this holiday season.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Construction paper or thin white cloths Markers and/or nontoxic paint Scissors (safety scissors for children) Laminating supplies Optional--photos of past Thanksgivings Sewing supplies if using cloths
  1. Step 1

Cut construction paper or cloths to the dimensions 12 inches by 18 inches. Choose construction paper or cloths depending on the thickness you want for your place mats.

  2. Step 2

Use brown, orange and red sheets of construction paper to cut out leaves. You can also use tissue paper. You can also cut out pilgrim hats, turkeys and pumpkins.

  3. Step 3

Glue cutouts to place mats. If using cloths, you will need to sew around the edges of the cutouts instead of gluing.

  4. Step 4

Decorate cutouts with markers and paint. This includes drawing details such as leaf veins, buckles on hats, and face and feathers for the turkeys.

  5. Step 5

Place copies of past Thanksgiving pictures around leaves. Glue into place. If using cloths, laminate the picture first and create a tight frame with cloth leaves.

  6. Step 6

Laminate construction paper place mats. Go to a copy store if you don't have supplies at home.

Tips & Warnings
  • To prevent mats from slipping on the table, place nonslip pad underneath. These can be found in the home section of department stores.
  • When children are cutting or sewing, adult supervision is advised.
