Select Headgear For a Child Without Hair

Whether a child loses her hair as the direct result of a medical condition that causes thin hair or hair loss, or because of cancer treatments or having their head shaved for surgery, it is important to find some kind of head gear for your child to wear in order to minimize the stares or gawking that might occur from the public or their peers. Head gear, including wigs, is also important to help your child retain dignity and self-esteem. Since hats and caps have become fashionable, as well, there is a large selection to choose from.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Help your child decide what kind of headgear she would like to have. Suggest some options like wigs, hats, scarves, and other items.

  2. Step 2

Set up a time to take your child shopping and allow an hour or more and visiting multiple stores so that your child can have a variety to choose from.

  3. Step 3

Ask your child about his favorite music group or singer, their favorite cartoon character, or even his favorite sport, as there are many different styles of hats sporting logos, photographs, icons, and characters related to your child's interests.

  4. Step 4

While shopping, let your child try on as many different hats, hoods, caps, or scarves as she would like and give her time to decide what she likes best. Let your child see herself in the mirrors located near store dressing rooms or in the hat and scarf section of the store. Purchase several items so that your child has a variety from which to choose at home.

  5. Step 5

Also, take your child to a sporting goods store or a discount or department store that carries sport team sweatshirts and jackets with hoods for outerwear to help cover their heads.

  6. Step 6

Do not select the headgear for your child if he is older than three years old. You may not necessarily like your child's choices, but the headgear needs to be something he likes and will be happy and excited to wear out in public and in school.

  7. Step 7

You might also go online to websites that offer wigs for children and where the images are usually photographs of children wearing the wigs or hair pieces, especially for older children or teens who may want to look more natural and as if her hair hadn't fallen out or been removed.

  8. Step 8

Let your child see the hairpieces and wigs on websites or stores in the area that sells wigs for children who have suffered hair loss. Let your child try on wigs or hairpieces in a store and then let her see herself in a mirror so she can select something she likes and feels attractive in.

  9. Step 9

You might also consider purchasing housecoats, pajamas, and other night wear with hoods for your child to wear to sleepovers, etc.
