Google has a host of tools built into their software that users don't always know about. One of the more useful ones is a built in unit convertor. It can do a number of things including weight, volume, distance, even currency. It can handle both simple and complex units and can incorporate mathematical equations as well.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A computer with internet access.
  • Units that need converting.
  1. Step 1

Using your internet browser, go to www.google.com

  2. Step 2

In the search bar type in the following.

    lb in kg

  3. Step 3

You can also convert quantities. Try this to see.

    32lb in kg

  4. Step 4

It can even handle compound units like you might find in physics. Now try this one:
    32ft/hr/hr in m/sec/sec

  5. Step 5

If you really want to use it to your advantage you can incorporate math as well. Google will do all the work for you. Here I'm also demonstrating currency conversion:

    12USD/200mi/3hr in GBP/km/sec

  6. Step 6

You can also use an alternate notation that looks more like an equation. You'll need to use a ? to represent the quantity you want you find:

    57K + 12C = ?K

Tips & Warnings
  • Even if you are in a specialized field like finance, physics, or chemistry google has accomodated for a number of these fields. Give it a try and see if it works.
  • You need to use computer calculator equavalents. For exponents use ^ like 3^2 is 3 squared. Square roots are fractional exponents so the quare root of 3 would be 3^(1/2). Google also employs some programmer shortcuts like sqrt for square root.
