Step 1
Whether you are going away for a family vacation, are moving, going away for the holidays or are going on some other trip, you may come across the challenge of having to fly with a toddler. The first step to an easy flight begins with buying your ticket: When you choose a seat for the flight choose a window seat and if possible try to sit in the bulk head seating where there is more leg room so the baby can play on the floor in front of you, and no one is sitting in front of you. Choose a flight during the child's nap time or close to bed time so she can sleep through at least some of the flight.
-
Step 2
When you pack your toddler's diaper bag don't over pack. Pack a few pampers, wipes, a change of clothes, snacks, a few toys, an empty sippy cup, if you have a portable dvd player pack that, a book and your child's lovey (a blanket or a stuffed animal).
-
Step 3
At the airport see if there is a play area which would make your time seem a lot shorter. Also take along a stroller that your toddler does not mind staying in and fill her tray with her favorite snacks. If she starts to get antsy and wants to get out, try taking a walk around the airport and point out things to her to keep her entertained until your flight starts boarding. Show her the airplanes through the window and tell her that you are getting on one to go see whoever it is that you are visiting if you are visiting someone.
-
Step 4
When you board the plane explain to your child that you are getting on the airplane and she has to sit down like a good girl like everyone else. Have her look out the wondow at the airplanes. Take out some of her toys and place them on the floor or in the pocket in front of your seat so she can easily access them. When the plane starts to take off, if your child uses a pacifier let her use it or give her something to drink or a lolipop to suck on so that her ears do not pop, and sit her on your lap so that she does not feel lightheaded or anything. During the flight keep her entertained with her toys and snacks and with a portable dvd player if you have one. When the flight attendant offers you a drink or snack fill your child's sippy cup with what she wants to drink, milk water or juice and pick a snack she will like.
-
Step 5
When your child starts showing signs of sleepiness, sit her on your lap with her lovey and see if she will fall asleep. When the plane has landed, you have survived your flight! Good job!

on 4/14/2009 Good advice! I have done three 4 hour flights with my child so far. The next one is the first time since he can walk. I plan to follow your advice.
