    Things You'll Need

Before you can light an oxyacetylene torch, turn on the acetylene valve, releasing enough acetylene to force the fire outside of the tip of the cutting torch. Get enough acetylene pressure to maintain fire outside of the tip.

Turn on the acetylene just enough to light the torch with the flint spark lighter. Adjust the flow of acetylene until the fire is just slightly spaced away from the tip of the cutting torch.

      • 3

Turn the oxygen on full. This helps to produce what is called a neutral flame.

      • 4

Mark your cutting surface for the cut. You can use some chalk or you can make a precut on the surface of the metal.

      • 5

After you have made a pre-cut ring, put the torch to the side of the metal and hold it there until the metal glows red-hot.

      • 6

Begin to cut the metal. The general rule of cutting is if the metal is thick, then cut the metal with the torch sideways; the thicker the metal, the lower the angle. If it is a thin metal, then the torch will sit perpendicular to the metal you are cutting. Position yourself behind the cut so you can see into the cut itself.

When you are done cutting the metal, turn off the oxygen first and then the acetylene after you are finished using the cutting torch.

    Tips & Warnings

    • When turning on a cutting torch it is very important that you pay attention to the sequence in which you light and extinguish the torch. Use proper ventilation when cutting. Please utilize proper eye covering to prevent damage to the eyes. Lack of proper eye covering can damage the retina.
