It’s a good idea to keep an emergency kit in your car so you can be prepared for the unexpected. In the winter it’s especially important, in case you get stranded in the snow. I’ll give you some easy tips to put together an emergency kit for your car.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

FOOD – Put in food that has a long shelf life. Cracker, granola bars and peanut butter are good choices. Take the food out and replace it before expires. That way you can eat it and won’t be wasting money. If you include canned items don’t forget the can opener.

  2. Step 2

WATER – Keep some bottled water in your vehicle. You can go a lot longer without food than you can without water.

  3. Step 3

FLASHLIGHT – Crank or shake flashlights are great because they don’t require batteries.

  4. Step 4

JUMPER CABLES – You should always carry these in your car.

  5. Step 5

MATCHES – Store them in a small waterproof container. Can be used to cook food, make a fire for warmth or to signal a search party.

  6. Step 6

FLARES – Makes you visible to others if you’re stranded or if your car breaks down to warn other that your vehicle is ahead.

  7. Step 7

BLANKETS – If you’re stranded for an extended period of time you will need to stay warm.

  8. Step 8

WEATHER RADIO – If you are stranded and lose power in your car this will alert you to impending bad weather. Also comes in handy if you’re at an outdoor event and need a weather update.

  9. Step 9

TOOLS – A multi-tool that has several features is handy to have.

  10. Step 10

MAPS – It’s always a good idea to have a map. If you are traveling in an unfamiliar area pick up a local map.

  11. Step 11

KITTY LITTER – Can be used under tires for traction.

  12. Step 12

SPARE TIRE – Check that yours is maintained.

  13. Step 13

Put emergency kit items in a waterproof container in your car.
