How to Change Your Keyboard Layout

There are many different languages and keyboard layouts you can choose from. This article will show you how to change your keyboard layout in the windows operating system.

  1. Step 1

    1. Open the control panel.

    To do this, click the start button in the lower left of your desktop and select (Settings - Control Panel) from the menu.

  2. Step 2

    2. Open the "Region and Language Options" popup.

    When the control panel opens from step one, it will be in one of two views. One view is the classic view and other view is the category view.

    Category view:
    To open the "Region and Language Options" popup from the category view,
    click on the "Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options", then click on "Regional and Language Options"

    Classic view:
    To open the "Region and Language Options" popup from the category view, simply double click "Region and Language Options" in the list.

  3. Step 3

    3. Select your language and keyboard layout.

    The "Regional and Language Options" popup should be open now.
    Click on the 'Languages' tab in the middle.
    Click the 'Details' Button

    Another popup will display and you will be on the 'Settings' tab which will show you a list of installed keyboards.

    Click the Add button.

    Select an 'Input Language'.
    Select a 'Keyboard layout/IME:'
    Then click the OK button.

    The popup will go away and you will be back to the 'Setting' tab and your newly selected keyboard layout will be in the list.

    Now click the 'Apply' button at the bottom of the popup.

    You will notice that one of the keyboard layouts is in bold. This is the current keyboard layout. To switch keyboard layouts click the 'Key Settings' button. For example, Left Alt+Shift+1, means to press and hold down the left alt button, press and hold down the shift key, then press 1 and release all three buttons.


    * The DVORAK keyboard layout is said to be a very efficient layout allowing you to type much faster than the standard layout.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you get a message that the effect will not take place, then redo the steps to avoid logging out and back in.
  • Remember to change your keyboard back to the US version or someone might go crazy trying use your settings.
