Dolores Hidalgo, Mexico, is a hidden gem in Central Mexico. Although small, it offers more than most cities several times its size. It makes a great day trip from either Guanajuato or San Miguel de Allende.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a sense of adventure
  • a camera
  1. Step 1

Pay tribute to the statue of Father Dolores Hidalgo, the father of Mexican Independence! The statue is located centrally, so you can't miss it!

  2. Step 2

Go to the beautiful European-styled park and enjoy some ice cream. There is plenty to choose from. You simply must try flavors such as avocado, beer, tequila and chili. This is a very memorable activity to do with kids!

  3. Step 3

Take a walk down the narrow, shop-lined streets. Shops in Dolores Hidalgo have prices that are much lower than those in neighboring towns. You can find everything from iron light fixtures to boxes of Talavera tile for ten dollars. While you're walking, take some pictures of the some of the beautiful architecture that you're sure to come across.

  4. Step 4

Go shopping for antique or custom-made furniture. If you like to collect antiques, you will be in paradise when you visit some of the furniture stores in Dolores Hidalgo. A departure from traditional American antiques, they can be had at reasonable prices. You can also buy unique pieces of recently made "rustic" furniture with hand carvings. If you have a few weeks, this is the best place in Mexico to order custom furniture.

  5. Step 5

Go to the market. There is just something about a small town market in Mexico that is simply irresistible.

  6. Step 6

Enjoy the drive back through winding mountain roads.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can ship any furniture finds from San Miguel de Allende, since it has a large American expat population.
  • Don't stop your car in order to take photos while on the road to Dolores Hidalgo. The road is narrow and buses speed through it regularly.
