How to Teach Daisies the Girl Scout Promise
Memorizing the Girl Scout Promise is a time honored tradition for new scouts. Instead of repetitive and boring, though, it can be a fun activity. The same little girls who memorize every word of a Disney Princess movie will be able to learn the Girl Scout Promise and even the Girl Scout Law a lot faster than their troop leaders! Use these simple ideas for helping Daisy Girl Scouts memorize the Girl Scout Promise.
Things You'll Need
- basic art supplies
- good strong voice
- official copy of the girl scout promise from the handbook or website

1
Print off a coloring page with the Promise. Some councils have made printable downloadable coloring books with the words of the promise on each page. Having the girls color each one and discuss how the picture shows the meaning of each line helps kids visualize the promise.
-
2
Recite the promise at the beginning of each meeting. At the end of the meeting, offer candies, ribbons, treats, a certificate or other prize to the girls who have already memorized it.
-
-
3
Create a file folder game by writing the Girl Scout Promise on sentence strips (available at teacher supply stores) and then cutting the lines into memorable phrases. Have the girls race to put the words in order.
-
4
Use the same game pieces above, and have each girl hold a piece, then challenge them to stand in order, with the Girl Scout Promise spelled out in front of them.
-
5
Consider buying some of the Girl Scout Camp CDs available through the Girl Scout store either online or at your local council office. The songs on the discs often repeat some of the wording in the promise and help it "come alive" for girls, especially those who love to sing.
-
6
Print the sentences of the promise on handwriting paper for the girls who like to write. Some people memorize things better when they've written them down, and since daisy girl scouts are learning to copy letters in school, using the words of the Promise for handwriting practice can help them memorize it faster, especially if they're already reading.

Set a goal to recite, or to lead, the Girl Scout Promise at an upcoming Council wide event. It's also a good incentive to get their parents to finish their uniforms!

Tips & Warnings
Send a copy home with each child, so that she can go over it with her parents and practice at home.
Record the group reciting the promise the first time you run through it and then each time afterward. When they hear how much better they've gotten, they'll be inspired to continue, and proud of the progress that they've made.
