Opening a business is a big challenge, yet it can bring many rewards and opportunities. There is the chance for unlimited income potential, the choice to run things the way you think they should be run, and the opportunity to make money while working at something you feel passionately about. If fitness is your passion, opening your own gym is a great way to learn more about the industry, while exposing others to something you love. Opening a gym requires a great deal of research, preparation and planning in order to be successful, but it will pay off in many ways as the business grows.

Instructions

    • 1

Check with your state and local governments to see if you need special permits beyond the normal business license. Typically, health-related businesses will require additional licensing, which includes interviews and inspections by the health department and other organizations. Your state department or county clerk's office can provide more information.

    • 2

Research what kind of fitness programs are popular in your area to help you decide how to model your own business. Do your potential clients like low key gyms at bargain prices, or are they looking for higher end facilities with the latest equipment? Find out what your market can support before you start construction.

    • 3

Learn how to use all the equipment you purchase for your facility, including weights, treadmills and other cardio machines, and train your staff to do the same. Proper training with equipment and machinery is important to prevent accidents and maintain a safe atmosphere.

    • 4

Hire instructors to teach popular classes, including Pilates, yoga and weight training. You'll want to look for staff that are certified as personal trainers as well, because this will help attract clients.

    • 5

Offer special pricing for clients who will sign up early and pay a deposit on membership. This is a great way to obtain capital for purchasing equipment and financing the construction and opening of your gym.

    • 6

Obtain adequate insurance. You don't want an injured member to be the end of your business because of an expensive lawsuit. Consult a lawyer to determine what kinds of insurance you need to protect yourself.
