Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cosmetology education
  • Creativity
  • Ability to well with others
  • Ability to work well for others!
  • Doing research
  1. Step 1

Cosmetology is a growth industry. Despite the lousy economy, there is wonderful career growth going on right now. People will actually scale back in other areas, because they always want to look great. And you can help them do just that! Cosmetology in 2006 had 600,000 career oriented jobs in the field. By 2016 there will be over 700,000 career jobs held by real people in this area.

  2. Step 2

How do you get a great job in the cosmetology field? Due to the fact that there are numerous jobs in cosmetology such as hairstylist, dermatologist, makeup artist, Salon owner and much more, there is a lot to choose from. Therefore, you need to decide what you want to do before you go to school. That way you won't be wasting money on a career choice that you may not enjoy.

  3. Step 3

Decide what you want to do, do the necessary research and go to school for the allotted time. Go to school at an accredited institution, that you enjoy and can afford. Ask friends and relatives what a great school is. Find schools online and do the research that way also. You can also go to school for one area, and switch choices. And you can go to school for one choice and become an instructor at an institution of you choice.

  4. Step 4

While going to school for your choice of cosmetology career, work very hard and take in everything you can. Learn the business side as well so that you can make as much money as possible. And this way, you can start your own business down the road. While at the school, it may be good also to learn more than one career such as learning hairstylist and makeup artist. This way you are covered.

  5. Step 5

Make the decision if you are going to set up shop locally upon graduation or if you will moving to a larger city. Makeup artists can become makeup artists for celebrities and for theater and Hollywood productions. You don't have to live in your own city for long. You can become a personal hairstylist for a well known celebrity and make very good money.

  6. Step 6

Of course, you will want to plan your future endeavors. Go to school, find out as much as you can about your field and work very hard. This way you can walk out of school and get a great job right away. Plan your future and where you want to be five years from now. Do you still want to be working for the same salon five years from now? Or do you want to work in New York City for on Broadway as a makeup artist? It's all up to you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Research the many careers now, before settling on just one to save time and money down the road.
  • Take more classes later on to keep up on what is current. Cosmetology is a continually evolving area.
  • Don't work for free--you don't have to once school is over.
