Instructions

    • 1

Prepare your hands. First, clip your fingernails. You probably wouldn't hurt yourself with slightly longer nails, but shorter nails will make you feel much more comfortable for the cervical check. Once you're done trimming, wash those hands with warm soapy water before the dilation check.

    • 2

Sit on the toilet with your legs spread apart. Place 1 leg on a stool next to the toilet. Preferably, elevate the leg opposite your dominant hand. This way, it isn't in the way of the cervical dilation check.

    • 3

Lube up your index finger and middle finger of your dominant hand before your check for cervical dilation. Especially if you're nervous, this will help them slide in much easier.

    • 4

Slide your 2 fingers inside your vagina for your cervical check. The correct hand position is with your hand curled around like a hook toward your body. Slide in towards your bottom until you cannot go any further. This is your cervix. It should feel like puckered lips. In the center, you will be able to slide a finger in if you have any dilation.

Tips & Warnings

  • Typically 1 fingertip is 1 centimeter, 2 finger tips is 2 centimeters, and so on.

  • Try to limit your own cervical checks. This can introduce bacteria and infection to your body as well as the body of your unborn baby.
