How to Get Fellowship Training in Cardiology in Italy

Cardiologists are doctors who specialize in the care of the heart. Fellowship training is the last stage of training on the road to becoming a heart specialist. Upon completion of a cardiology fellowship in the U.S., a doctor is eligible to take the exams necessary to become a board certified cardiologist. In Italy that involves attaining the Diploma of European Cardiologist designation conferred by the European Board for the Speciality of Cardiology (EBSC).

      Get admitted into medical school. Medical training in Italy takes six years, and students are admitted directly from high school. You need to have taken classes in chemistry, biology, physics and mathematics and score highly on those subjects on the medical school entrance examination.

      Complete medical school, graduate and pass your state licensing exam to become an MD and thereby authorized to practice medicine.

      Apply for residency programs. Cardiologists in Italy, and who in turn will be recognized by the unified body of cardiologists in Europe, need to have a combined six years of residency or post-MD training. Three of those years need to be in cardiology and the other three in internal medicine, emergency medicine, general surgery or any such combination with at least two of the years in internal medicine.

      Upon completion of your residency training and qualifying as a cardiology specialist in Italy, you need to apply for individual accreditation with the the European Board for the Speciality of Cardiology (EBSC) to have a Diploma in European Cardiologist (see Resources below).

      Apply for sub specialty training or fellowship training in the other branches of cardiology such as echocardiography, electrophysiology, interventional cardiology and nuclear cardiology.

  • If you are a graduate from an undergraduate program in the U.S. and would like to attend medical school in Italy, you need to apply through the Italian consulate (see Resources below). Medical graduates from countries outside of Italy or Europe are better off completing their residency training in Italy to specialise in cardiology if they intend to seek fellowship opportunities there.
