Step 1
You are very likely to find your cat at your local animal control service (the city pound), privately run shelters, humane societies, and other animal rescue services.
-
Step 2
You should go in person every two or three days and check to see if your pet has been turned in. The reason to go in person is that cats are constantly being brought into these places where people are overworked and tend to be brief over the phone.
-
Step 3
Your description of your cat and their idea of the same animal may not match.
Find out about their policy for euthanasia. Some shelters put animals to sleep if they need extensive medical attention. Some government shelters only keep cats a few days. If the policy is to keep unclaimed animals for only a few days and then put them to sleep, its best to check the shelter every day. -
Step 4
Laws are different from state to state. In some states if a cat is brought to the city pound without a rabies tag on him, the pound has to put him to sleep right away as a matter of public health.
