It's that time of year when families gather to share the wonders of the Christmas season - food, drink, company and gifts. Lots of gifts. Gifts for everyone. The problem is all these gifts can create stress. For some, the stress is in the number of gifts they must buy. For others it is the fear that someone will be left out. And, for some, it is the cost of even a few gifts that cause endless amounts of stress. By setting a few guidelines your Christmas can be much more relaxing and even more memorable.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Creativity
  • Willingness to stick to a plan
  1. Step 1

Set limits. Make a budget. Simply set a limit on the amount of money you are willing to spend on gifts - then stick to it.

  2. Step 2

Make a list of everyone you would like to buy a gift for. Divide the number of people on your list by the amount of your budget. This is how much you can spend on each gift. If your list is too long make a second list of the people who you feel you must buy a gift for and repeat the math.

  3. Step 3

For those people who didn't make your cut in the step above you will need to be creative if you wish to give them a gift. Think homemade. Think cookies and cakes. Think time.

We all have skills that can be used as gifts for those we love. Devoting time to helping in a garden, making small repairs around the house and giving free babysitting to young parents are excellent gifts.

  4. Step 4

Bargain shop. Check thrift stores an consignment stores. Shop online to find the best buys before heading out to do your Christmas shopping.

  5. Step 5

Make all purchases with cash or a debit card. Purchasing on credit only delays the costs and adds interest and fees.

  6. Step 6

Do not gift just to give a gift. A gift should never be given with resentment of any kind.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be considerate of family members who may be strapped financially.
  • Suggest that the entire extended family set limits. Draw names and limit the number of gifts each person should buy.
  • Have a craft Christmas. Limit gifts to those you make yourself.
  • Have a white elephant Christmas - trade your junk for someone else's junk.
  • Remember that there really is a reason for Christmas that does not involve shopping and decorations.
  • Do not go in to debt buying gifts in order to save face with family and friends.
  • Do not give more than you can afford.
