How to make a yummy, flaky single 9" pie crust for such pies as pumpkin, chocolate chip, pecan, and chocolate pies among others.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/3 cup plus 1 Tablespoon of vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup of all- purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 2-3 Tablespoons of cold water
  • Rolling Pin
  • 9" pie pan

Using a pastry blender (if you have one, if you don't then use 2 butter knives to "cut" not stir the mixture), cut the shortening, flour and salt together into small bits. It should look like the photo when it is ready.

Pour in a tablespoon of water at a time, sprinkling it around. Stir with fork in between tablespoons. Do this until all of the flour mixture is moistened. It should look like the picture.

  3. Step 3

Gather mixture into a ball. Lay it and flatten it slightly on a floured surface. Using a floured rolling pin, roll it out evenly until it is 2" larger than the pan. Then place the pie dough into the pie pan. To make it easier, you may try folding it in fourths and putting it in the pan, then unfolding it.

  4. Step 4

Press the pie crust into the pan. Press firmly against the side and bottom. Trim off the top until it overhangs by one inch. Pinch the edges around the top of the pie.

  5. Step 5

Now it is ready to fill. Follow the recipe for the pie you are using.
