My fourteen year old granddaughter wanted to make ornaments for their school craft booth. We made these and had a lot of fun. Here's how to make cinnamon ornaments for the holiday.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 cup ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup applesauce
  • cookie cutters
  • ribbon
  • wire rack
  • tube paint (optional)
  1. Step 1

Combine 1 cup ground cinnamon with 3/4 cup applesauce to form a stiff dough, adjusting the ingredients as needed.

  2. Step 2

Roll out the dough to 1/4 in. thickness. If you don't have a rolling pin, use the side of a glass.

  3. Step 3

Cut out shapes with cookie cutters.

  4. Step 4

Make a hole for a ribbon loop to hang them (I used a straw to make the hole)

  5. Step 5

Carefully place on a wire rack to dry. Let them air dry for several days, turning over occasionally.

  6. Step 6

I have lots of tube paints so I let her decorate them too. They are supposed to be natural but the paint adds a colorful touch that she liked. She is really creative when it comes to design. I just see the basics but she really puts a lot into it.

  7. Step 7

Here's another example of a cinnamon ornament.

Tips & Warnings
  • It makes approximately 12 very sweet smelling ornaments.
  • Side benefits - the house smells wonderful and I saw a really different side of my granddaughter who's usually very sports oriented.

on 8/25/2009 Beautiful idea - we also hot-glued little bells, stars, and colored balls on our ornaments. My daughter sprinkled hers with glitter before drying them. Lovely!!
