Wood lathe tools are made specifically for the hobby. These tools must be sharp in order to work properly. A sharp lathe tool takes off more wood requiring less sanding. A dull tool takes longer and requires more work. Keeping a wood lathe tool sharpened isn't a difficult process, but it can be time consuming, especially since the tools need to be sharpened often. If you want to do yourself a favor you need to learn the proper way to sharpen your lathe tools.

  1. Step 1

Set up a grinder with a 1000-grit water stone.

  2. Step 2

Insert your wood lathe tool into a honing guide. This mechanism establishes an angle for your tool and holds it in place.

  3. Step 3

Turn on the machine and slowly move the tool into the grinder stone.

  4. Step 4

Grind the lathe tool until there appears a burr on the backside edge. You will feel this catch with your finger nail.

Turn the tool over and grind down the burr. The backside is the blade's cutting edge and must be flattened.

  6. Step 6

Grind the cutting edge of the blade until it is flat and smooth. There should be no valleys, waves, or teeth.
