How to Attach a Deck Railing

Building a deck is a great way to improve the look and value of your home. Decks provide extra space and room for grilling, lounging and relaxing in the sun. Even though they are not like adding an interior room, most home buyers view decks as additions to their living space, and therefore they are more likely to buy a home with a deck. Decks are made even more attractive by the type of railing they have. There are many kinds, from traditional to modern styles, and any type of railing can be attached to any type of deck.       Measure off the height of the deck railing on the deck post and make a light pencil mark on each one where the bottom of the railing will be attached.

      Cut the deck railing to size using a miter saw, so it slides between the two posts. Then fit the railing into place to make sure it fits correctly. Make any adjustments to the length of the railing using a grinder or miter saw so it fits perfectly.

      Drill two diagonal holes into each end of the railing right through the top corner and out through the middle of the end of the railing.

      Slide two galvanized nails into these holes so the sharp ends point toward the posts.

      Fit the deck railing to the posts again and tap the nails just lightly into the post beam to hold the deck railing. Use a carpenter level to make sure the railing is straight, then hammer the rails in the rest of the way.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a straight carpenter's level and take many measurements along the railing for the straightest fit.
