Ham Radio

Ham Radio can be a fun and rewarding hobby. It can be another great way to reach out to people across the globe. Below I will illustrate exactly how you go about attaining your Ham Radio Operator's License.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Practice Tests
  • Code Sheets
  1. Step 1

Decide what kind of Ham Radio License you want: Technician, General, or Extra. Each license has its own specifications. If you are not interested in learning code, then go for Technician. However, if you would like to use code, then you may opt for General or Extra, which require a 5 minute coding test. A Technician's license will allow you to use FM 2-way radios and repeaters on the VHF and UHF bands. It also enables you to send computer data, TV signals, or use Amateur Radio orbiting spacecrafts.

  2. Step 2

Study for the Test. There are 3 great ways to study for your 55 question exam. One of which is to take a class. These are often offered by local radio clubs, colleges, or other schools. Self-study is another option. On the internet you can easily find guides and sample tests to assist you in studying for the exam. A great book for study is, "Now You're Talking! All You Need to Get Your First Ham Radio License", published by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). This book can be ordered online for about $19.00 by visiting their website at: http://www.arrl.org . The last option is to just be a Know-it-all. People who have backgrounds in electronics often know most of the theories and my only need to review the FCC rules and regulations.

  3. Step 3

Learn Morse Code: This step is optional if you only intend to get your Technician's license. If you are wanting to learn Morse code, try starting with the 5 words per minute tests. This can usually be done by studying for about 15 minutes each night for about 2 or 3 weeks. By passing your coding test you gain access to voice communications on the 10 meter band, giving you world wide communication.

  4. Step 4

Find a place to take your Exam. Once you are ready and know all the information and can code at 5wpm(optional) you are ready to take your test. Tests are given by Volunteer Examiners and a small fee will be charged to take the test. You may want to ask a local ham if they know of a test site or you can search the online exam site database, provided by ARRL.

  5. Step 5

Pass your Test! Go to your testing site at the designated time and pass your test.
